Before getting into the specifics of computers it is important to understand where we stand historically with computers, and where we are going. Computers were first used for basic computations and mainly by the government. They contained minimal storage and offered nothing in the way of communication. As their capabilities grew though, computers reached the business sector and then personal life. This expanded the use of computers by allowing them to store data and personal files. This feature grew so exponentially that now companies can build customized profiles for individual users and store data for the user. It also brought the ease of communication to new heights with innovations like email and instant messaging.
However, this growth happened so rapidly that it was nearly impossible to keep up with the newest technology and all its features. Just as people became comfortable with the basics of a new software or hardware piece, a newer version would come out and make the previous one obsolete. This created a gap in computer fundamentals and literacy that continues to frustrate users and puts them at a higher risk of becoming victims of cyber-crime.
We now find ourselves at an interesting point in technological history. There are two generations that grew up during, or, just after the technologic boom and have a solid foundation of computer knowledge. These generations are now tasked with bridging the educational gap to raise the collective foundation of technological literacy. This can look like helping your mom login to their email or teaching your boss how to use the new software at work. It is an interesting obstacle that requires patience and strong communication skills.
It is also an obstacle that will become increasingly difficult as technology advances. The nature of technology is one of increasing difficulty. With more complicated software coming out that has more capabilities it will become increasingly difficult to teach others without a foundational understanding of your own. Additionally, more complicated technology creates more opportunities for cyber criminals to exploit. It is going to be come easier for cyber criminals to make realistic scam emails or bypass basic levels of security. Meaning that as technology progresses, the importance of technological literacy only rises.
